Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance (ASLI) Program
Prepare to meet new challenges. The ASLI program prepares you to meet the challenges and opportunities presented by the use of the surplus lines market. Earning this designation can be beneficial to industry veterans who wish to enhance their prestige and marketability. It can also benefit those who are relatively new to nonadmitted companies and who want to demonstrate a commitment to understanding their clients' needs.
Required Courses
To earn the ASLI designation, students must pass the exams for ASLI 163, ASLI 164, and any two of the listed electives. The Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU) designation granted by the Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS) will satisfy both elective requirements.
ASLI 163—Surplus Lines Insurance Operations: Fundamentals of Surplus Lines Insurance Operations, Insurance Regulation, Surplus Lines Insurance Marketing, New Product and Program Development, Underwriting, Ratemaking, The Claim Function, Reinsurance, Financial Analysis of Insurers and Intermediaries, and Insurance Cycles and the Surplus Lines Market.
ASLI 164—Surplus Lines Insurance Products: Overview of Surplus Lines Insurance Products, General Liability, Professional Liability, Management Liability, Commercial Auto, Environmental, Excess and Umbrella Liability, Commercial Property, Business Income and Extra Expense, Commercial Crime, Aviation, Ocean Marine, Inland Marine, and Personal Insurance.

NOTE: The Registered Professional Liability Underwriter (RPLU) designation granted by the Professional Liability Underwriting Society satisfies both electives. Outside courses or programs are subject to a $125 waiver application fee.
Course Sequence: It is better to take ASLI 163 before ASLI 164.
Exam Type
CPCU 510/530/540: Computer-administered essay (30-35 questions). Time allotted: 3 hours.
AIS 25: Exam on request (EOR). Sixty objective (multiple-choice) questions. Time allotted: 2 hours.
The Delivering Insurance Services exam is an Exam-on-Request (EOR) and can be taken in two ways. Take the multiple-choice exam (1) by computer at an Institutes Approved On-Site Testing Center or a Prometric Testing Center during our testing windows or (2) on paper in your workplace at any time.
ASLI 163/164 and all other above exams: Eighty-five computer-administered, objective (multiple-choice) questions. Time allotted: 2 hours.
