Associate in Fidelity and Surety Bonding (AFSB) Program

Enhance your career options. The AFSB curriculum is broad-based and practical. Earning the designation can help you to enhance your career options by expanding your understanding of both contract and noncontract surety, as well as crime insurance. You will gain knowledge and skills that you can immediately apply to your daily responsibilities. The AFSB program was developed with the encouragement and technical assistance of the National Association of Surety Bond Producers and the Surety Association of America.

Required Courses

You may take only AFSB 151 and 152 or AFSB 151 and 153 if specializing would better meet your career needs. This option does not earn the AFSB designation.

The following courses are required to earn the AFSB designation:

AFSB 151-Principles of Suretyship: Types of Bonds, Bond Production/Underwriting, Financial Statements/Analysis, Credit Terminology/Laws, Credit Investigation/Reports, Bond Ratemaking, Fidelity/Surety Reinsurance

AFSB 152-Contract Surety: Contract Bond Law, Bid Process, Underwriting, Contractors’ Financial Statements, Trend Analysis/Forecasting, and Contract Surety Claims

AFSB 153-Crime Insurance and Noncontract Surety: License and Permit Bonds, Public Official Bonds, Court Bonds, Miscellaneous Surety Bonds, Commercial Crime Insurance, and Financial Institution Bonds.

CPCU 530-The Legal Environment of Insurance

CPCU 540-Finance for Risk Management and Insurance Professionals

Course sequence: It is best to take AFSB 151 first and to take CPCU 540 before AFSB 152.

Exam Type

AFSB 151/152/153: Eighty-five computer-administered, objective (multiple-choice) questions. Time allotted: 2 hours.

CPCU 530/540: Computer-administered essay. Time allotted: 3 hours.
