MAJOR CHANGES TO THE ASLI PROGRAM

The Insurance Institute of America (IIA) and Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation announced major changes to the Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance (ASLI) designation program, replacing ASLI 161 and ASLI 162 with two new required courses and now allowing students to select their two elective courses from a single list of courses.

The ASLI designation was developed for surplus lines professionals by the IIA with the assistance of the Foundation. To earn the ASLI designation, students must pass examinations in two required courses and two elective courses.

The two required foundation courses, ASLI 161 and ASLI 162, will be replaced with ASLI 163—Surplus Lines Insurance Operations and ASLI 164—Surplus Lines Insurance Products. In addition, under new ASLI completer rules, the current two elective course categories—coverage courses and operational courses—will be eliminated. Students will be able to choose their electives from a single course list in a number of areas such as claims, underwriting, risk management, reinsurance, and finance.

The study materials for the new ASLI 163 and 164 courses are scheduled for publication in August 2006. Exams covering the new courses will be administered beginning in the January–March 2007 exam window. The ASLI 161 and ASLI 162 exams will be available through the October–December 2006 testing window.

More information on the changes to the ASLI program, including how current students are affected, is available.

NEW GRADE ANALYSIS

A new grade analysis procedure that allows students with non-passing grades to receive more feedback than was available in the past has been implemented.

Students may log on to our Web site to view their grades, click on an exam they did not pass, and view a printable screen report. The screen report lists the educational objectives by assignment for questions answered incorrectly.

This new feature is available for exams taken from February 15, 2006, forward. It is not available for exams taken before this date. The new grade analysis feature will also be available for computer-based EORs (Exams On Request).
