Online Classes FAQ

What classes are available online?

Check our registration page for a listing of available courses including prices.

Are the textbooks online?

No. The textbooks and course guide must be ordered separately through our Web site or by calling customer service at (800) 644-2101.

Do I need to download any special software?

Some of our classes may have attachments that are viewed in PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, or Excel. The classroom provides links for you to download free viewers for these attachments.

Can I access the classroom from both my office and home?

Yes. You can access the classroom from anywhere that you have Internet access—your home, office, laptop, library, etc.

How much time will I need to spend in the classroom?

Most of our students spend between 2 and 4 hours per week in an online class. This is about equivalent to the time you would spend commuting to and from and attending a live class. However, you can visit the classroom in small chunks of time according to your own schedule.

How long (how many weeks) does a class last?

The online classes usually last 2 more weeks than the number of assignments in a course. For example, INS 22 with 12 assignments lasts 14 weeks. This allows for a week of software orientation, 12 weeks of class, and a week of review.

Do I need to be online at a certain time or day?

No. You can access the classroom and complete your studies whenever it is convenient for you, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. However, the instructor will introduce a new assignment each week to help keep you on pace for the exam.

Will I be able to see and talk to my instructor and fellow students?

There is no audio or video tied to the classroom. You will not be able to see or verbally speak to others in the classroom.

How do I communicate with the instructor and other students?

Much of the class takes place in a bulletin board-type area called the discussion board. This replaces your live class discussion, but you do not need to be online at the same time. All messages posted to the discussion board can be viewed by all students in the class and the instructor. Because all the discussion takes place through the written word, you can review prior discussions at any time.

What kind of activities are available in the classroom?

Each class and each instructor will have different activities available. Among things you might find in the classroom are essay quizzes, multiple-choice quizzes, matching exercises, crossword puzzles, and flashcards.

Can I see what a class is like?

Sure. Visit our demo class to get an idea of how the online classes work. Please note that, because it is a demonstration class, not all features will be operational.

Can I receive a grade for the class?

Your instructor can provide you with a grade if you want one or need it for employer reimbursement for the class. The grade is separate and distinct from a grade on the national examination. Only a passing grade on the Institutes' national exam earns credit with the Institutes towards any designation.

Can I receive CE credit for my performance in an online class?

CE credit is not available for participation in the Institutes Online classes for our CPCU and IIA courses. Passing the national exam will provide CE credit in most states.

Do I take the exam online?

Studying in the Institutes Online classroom does not change the way you register for or take the exam. Your textbook & course guide will include a booklet explaining exam registration procedures.
